FáilteWelcome to the website of Rathcabbin National School. Situated in the Parish of Lorrha-Dorrha , the most northerly parish in Co. Tipperary. The village of Rathcabbin is approximately half way between the towns of Portumna, Co Galway to the west and Birr, Co. Offaly to the east. We are a rural school surrounded by rich, fertile countryside. Our School Today... We are a four teacher rural school and have completed WSE with the inspectorate in 2012. This report praised many aspects of the school and can be viewed on the Department’s site. (www.education.ie) The school has long been an established source of a full and balanced education to the children of the area but is also seeing many changes and great progress in recent years. Our numbers have been increasing in recent years and with new children enrolling. We have added a new classroom and are continuously working on refurbishment projects so that our school is being enjoyed by all. We aim to further develop our school in the coming term and beyond thanks to great support from our parents and local community. Along with a strong dedication to teaching the full curriculum the children here have many opportunities to experience other activities like hurling, football, soccer, golf tennis, athletics, hip hop, debating, quiz team, swimming (currently running every Tuesday), Irish Dancing (every Friday), music, singing and drama where we stage our concert night. The school is equipped with interactive whiteboards in each room and a suite of tablets and laptops that the children use in supervised structured class lessons. We are developing our ICT education and developing pupils’ computer skills from processing to design (scratch, web design) with older classes and plan to develop this throughout the school. Classes 3rd to 6th are currently doing this having completed lessons in internet safety and cyberbullying awareness. Chidren are currently attending German lessons at our school every Tuesday after class from 3pm-4pm with a native german speaker residing in the parish. Children also will have a choice in taking part in other activities as blocks are arranged.
In 2010 one of our past pupils Patrick Bonnar Maher brought the senior and under 21 All Ireland hurling trophies back to our school as a star member of both panels. Thankfully Tipp reached the top again in 2016 and we were very proud to see Bonnar win a 2nd Senior All Ireland Hurling medal. We had a very special day when Bonner visited with the Liam McCarthy Cup along with his fellow clubmen involved with the victorious panel-Brian Hogan and selector John Madden. |

Today the boys and girls in the school play together in our large playground and in class participate in a wide variety of activities - as mentioned above with drama, visual arts, music, environmental care and these combined with the curricular core areas ensure a holistic education for all the pupils. |
